The Waste Land was greatly influenced by the legend of Holy Grail in which the protagonist' s body plays a determining part in the myth of life and fertility. The most obvious influence of the Holy Grail upon The Waste Land lies in its adoption of the body-troubled legendary king. The Fisher King, the prophets and all other characters in The Waste Land met various kinds of trouble, could not participate in vegetation ceremonies, and were thus disfigured into fisher kings. Such a narrative of the troubled body not only betrays Eliot' s New England Puritan background, the Eliots' health condition and matrimonial relations, but also serves as a successful case for Eliot' s theory of impersonality.
