Plastic Number is a measure-system of real three-dimensional quantity created by Van der Laan and appropriates to architecture, to make clear the meeting together of the continuous quantity of architectonic size and the discrete quantity of abstract number. Thus the quantity of space and form can be read off from the building. The laws of the plastic number are determined by the lower and upper limits of our normal ability to perceive difference in size among three-dimensional objects. The article describes how to derive the ground-ratio and the measure-systems of plastic number, and shows plastic number occur in building with five types of column thickness to intercolumniation in Vitruvius's "The Ten Books" and the housing project designed by Timothy R. Hart's.
