六朝志怪小说婚恋故事的一个情节要素就是"分离原则",即人与异类之间的婚恋关系大多以分离告终。这种情节模式的产生有一定的文化背景和社会心理原因,从发生学角度可以联想到上古高禖祭典的仪式性限制,从社会心理角度体现了乱世中人理想幻梦的破灭。此外,分离原则也与个体本能的安全需要以及神话传说中的禁忌母题有关。
