1898年是中国文学由传统向现代嬗变的一个重要转捩点。是年,文学观念和语言观念出现了重大变革,文学进化观念开始深入人心,文学作为思想启蒙之利器的观念进一步被强化,以启蒙民众为目标的晚清白话文运动的序幕正式拉开,中国文学传播方式的近现代转型成为一种不可扭转的发展趋势,诗界、文界、小说界的创作面貌也有了重大变化。借助政治的外力,中国文学一改往昔蹒跚的步履,由渐变期进入突变期。

The year 1898 was a mining point in the transition from tradition to modernity on the part of Chinese literature. In this year, literary ideas and linguistic ideas both underwent great changed. People began to take to the idea of literary evolvement and the knowledge that literature was a powerful weapon in the enlightenment of human mind also playing its part which gave rise to The Vernacular Movement that tries to free the masses from ignorance. The modem turn in the publicizing of Chinese literature was inevitable. Poetry, prose and the novel all took tremendous changes. With the help of politics, gradual changes in Chinese literature were replaced by a leap in its progress.
