在一般社交场合,‘先生’是一个极其普通的称谓。可是,在古色古香、却又永远生机勃勃的燕园里,只有为数不多的人,才被师生们由衷崇敬地称为‘先生’。这些在北大被尊为‘先生’的人,无一不是德高望重的宗师泰斗。
On general occasions of social intercourse, "master" is a most popular form of address among people. But on thePeking University campus with an air of great antiquity that is always dynamic, only a small number of people are called "masters" with great reverence by both teachers and students. Those who are respectfully called "masters" at Peking University are unexceptionally masters of great learning and integrity or leading scholars of the times with great virtue and high prestige.
