The Bear is the most famous and important work of Faulkner' s "The Trilogy of Forest". The primitive wilderness, Big Ben and Sam in the story are the concrete embodiments of wilderness image. By depicting hunting, a ritual which can intimately touch the nature, the story expresses the author' s respect and longing for the natural world and the nostalgic and melancholy feeling on the disappearance of it, and also exposes the contradiction between industrialized civilization and wildemess in the modern society.
