Irritating Let 'em Eat Cake at Opera North

格什温的《让他们吃蛋糕吧》在英国利兹大剧院的演出，紧随格什温缺乏活力的百老汇讽刺剧《为君而歌》其后，却比前者还要让人倒胃口。

OUTLINE/After presenting a new production of Gershwin's 1931 Broadway hit Of Thee I Sing last October,Opera North now pairs it with its less successful follow-up,Let'em Eat Cuke,written two years later.The cast works hard to give it pizzazz,with William Dazeley and Bibi Heal giving attractive performances as the presidential couple and Steven Beard repeating his show-stealing turn as the hapless VP Alexander Throttlebottom.Everyone else grins and mugs it up gamely. Wyn Davies conducts with the requisite swing,and Caroline Gawn's utility production,designed by Tim Hopkins,is colorful and lively.
