The essay attempts to interpret Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift in light of Bakhtin's poetics of carnivalization. The carnival squares, the crowning/ decrowning of carnival king and the carnival collective alive in the novel will be discussed in details. These aspects give the novel a sense of comedy. They possess the idealistic and comic quality, As a contrast, they make the isolation, chaos and dullness in the real life in American society more apparent. They reveal the ironic aspect of the worship of power and money within American middle class intellects and show deep concern about the future of mankind. In this way, they deepened our understanding of the theme of existentialism in the novel.
