In the early period of Barthes＇ semiotic research, he was a representative of French Structuralism. He followed Saussure＇s semiotic theories and applied them to his work. In the middle period of his research, he further developed Saussure＇s theory in terms of further expounding signifier and signified, emphasizing on parole and analyzing syntagm and paradigm. In the later period, Barthes changed to be a post--structuralist and overthrew Saussure＇s theory in terms of the relationship between linguistics and semiotics and linear theory.
