Abstract ： The frequently used meaning of Tang （唐） in classic literature are names of dynasty, nation, or family name. The etymological meaning of Tang （ 唐 ） is big, great or high. The words Tang （唐） and Tang （堂） are paronyms. Tang （唐） had other familiar meanings in ancient Chinese, such as road, embankment, pond. With the meanings extending, some new words, like Tang （塘）, arised. Tang （塘） ＇ s meaning extended in further way, including post road, post, ten miles.
