For Elizabeth Bishop, a canon poet in modem American poetry, literacy is a mode of cognition and memory, rendering her otherwise chaotic experiences construable and meaningful. Out of the 110 poems from Elizabeth Bishop : The Complete Poems 1927-1979, 44 are directly associated with water. Belonging to a Heraclitean world, Bishop's water is a flux object capable of evoking opposite perceptions and sustaining endless transformations. The opposite source natures peculiar to water as an entity are always reversed in Bishop's water poems, transcending the idealized cognitive model. Water serves not only as imagery in her poems but also as an element engaged water poems embody fully her masterful in forming the cognition and memory of the poetic subject. Bishop's negative capability of beholding objective entities.
