Sin and sympathy, the two major themes in Hawthorne＇s novels, are getting more and more concern from readers. Sin can be regarded as the violation of morality and disrespect for the sanctity of human soul, while sympathy is the ability to feel others＇ feelings and the willingness toshare their burdens out of mercy. Although superficially sin seems to be irrelevant to sym- pathy, in Hawthorne＇s novels, what is really concerned is the close and complicated relationship between the two items.
