Ancient Earthenware Pillow in North China

枕，俗称“枕头”，其实在现代汉语中的枕，并不是枕着头的意思，头字其实是类似砖头、石头一类的后缀。汉代的“说文解字”中说：“枕，卧所荐首者。”即讲明枕的出处。

The materials of ancient pillows arrange from wood.jude, copper to bamboo and earthenware. Among them,wood is most easily get. so there is a sign of wood(木)in the chinese character枕(pillow).However, earthenware pillows are most widely spread in quantity. Earthenware pillows are main products from the folk kilns of north China.They first appeared a little rough but in large quantity in Sui and Tang dynasties,then became popular in North Song,Liao,Jin and Yuan dynasties and reached the height of its grandeur in Song,Liao and Jin dynasties. After that,earthenware pillows declined gradually in Ming and Qing dynasties.
