Objective To study the relationship between ankle -brachial index (ABI) and the severity of coronary artery stenosis. Methods Totally 196 patients who underwent coronary angiography were included. Firstly, they were divided into four groups according to the number of coronary artery stenosis: normal control group, single vessel disease group, double vessels disease group and three vessels disease group. Secondly, combined the single vessel group and double vessels group into moderate coronary artery disease. So the patients were divided into three groups: normal control group, moderate coronary artery disease group and severe coronary artery disease group. Lastly, they were divided in two groups: normal control group and coronary artery disease group. ABI was compared among different groups. Results Compared with the three vessels disease group, ABI was significantly higher in normal control group, single vessel disease group and double vessels disease group, but no significant difference in ABI were found among the later three groups. Compared with the severe coronary artery disease group, ABI was significantly higher in normal control group and moderate coronary artery disease group, but no significant difference in ABI was found among the later two groups. Also, ABI was not significantly different between normal control group and coronary artery group. ABI was negatively correlated with Gensini score of coronary stenosis ( r = - 0.25, P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusions ABI is negatively correlated with the degree of coronary artery stenosis. ABI ≤0.9 is a good predictor of severe coronary artery disease.
