William Golding' s The Inheritors , seemingly simple in plot and language, is capable of a variety of interpretations. In the novel, the tribe of Neanderthals respects nature and all the life in it while the new people materialize nature and are on the alert to protect themselves from all that is not part of their tribe. Examined in the perspective of ecocriticism, the novel reveals an ecological awareness in the author' s implied dialectical attitude towards the Neanderthal and their inheritors, i.e. the new people. Although the writer is in sympathy with the innocent Neanderthal, he has left hints in the text to remind the reader that the new people with their intelligence are still our hope.
