An Analysis of the Causes of Jane Austen's Irony

反讽是简.奥斯丁创作的一大艺术特色。从历史文化语境下进行观照,18世纪女性写作被主流文化所排斥,玛丽.沃斯通克拉夫特这一文学历史事件更使女性作家的创作背景雪上加霜。所有这些促成了置身其中的简.奥斯丁选择了反讽的创作策略,从而使其既间接隐晦地表达了自己的思想,又有效地回避了由于文本的开放性而招来的抵制和攻击。

Irony is one of the greatest features of Jane Austen＇s writing. From the perspective of history and culture, this paper attempts to reveal the causes of Jane Austen＇s employment of irony. In the 18th century, women writing was excluded from the mainstream culture; furthermore, the event of Mary Wollstonecraft made the situation more serious. Thus the adoption of the irony strategy helped Austen to express her thoughts indirectly and connotatively, and at the same time, keep her far from rejection and attack caused by the openness of the texts.
