Deeply rooted in the minds of the Japanese, Xundu is a special way of literal translation the Japanese have used to interpret the Chinese texts. But Sorai Ogyu, the famous scholar of the Edo period, objected to the practice, saying that due to the difference between the two languages, Xundu was inexact and detrimental to the understanding of the original. Instead, he proposed Yixue, i.e. , translating Chinese with spoken language, but emphasized that Xun and Yi were both means only, neither could represent the original as a whole. However, Sorai didn't totally reject Xundu, thinking it valuable in a way.
