As one of the most prominent writers in contemporary American literature, Don Delillo in his works has covered almost all the important American social issues since the Second World War and exhibited in them a kaleidoscopic society of 'magic and dread'. Focusing on Underworld, this essay selectively studies the illusiveness of an American identity, which is the premise of the logic of Us versus Them between America and the Soviet Union during the Cold War era; it also exposes the profound relationship between garbage that rapidly increases and the consumer society. The complexity and uncertainty of these questions leave much for further study in this area.
