Umberto Eco's Baudolino vividly recaptures the social customs of the Middle Ages through the depiction of Baudolino, the protagonist. The novel is an admixture of myths of the Middle Ages, the Crusade, the rise of Biblical metropolis, the power struggle between the Pope and the Emperor, the pursuit of religious doctrine and mysterious romanticism. In the royal game between war and peace, belief and confusion, love and murder, truth and falsehood, the novel views in retrospect the historical objectivities, deception, devotion and symbolisms.
