As a prestigious writer and a great friend of the Chinese people, Pearl Buck enjoys great popularity in China, but she has also received criticism from some Chinese scholars and even politicians. This essay tries to explore the root of this complicated cultural phenomenon from the Confucian culture, and suggests that we should have courage to face the reality and to eliminate some misunderstanding of her in the past and the present. We should also translate her works that have not been translated so as to make a fair appraisal of her. This is the best way we cherish the memory of our beloved friend, who is a builder of the bridge between Chinese and American cultures.
