Based on the traverse method and taken incomplete clothoid and arc as the foundation unit, a five element traverse method for highway horizontal alignment design is presented. The essence of the three element traverse method and the curve design method which is widely used abroad are adopted in this method. A computer program is developed. It can rapidly and accurately calculate the azimuth and the coordinates for both the characteristic points and any individual point on the horizontal alignment.
