李白一生迫切希望建功立业,充满强烈的功业理想,毕生都在顽强而执著地追求自己的理想。李白推崇那些建树奇勋的历史名士的地位和价值,欲重蹈他们成功的路径。然而,李白在政治上一无所成,一生都处在痛苦和幽愤之中,始终处于既非仕亦非隐的特殊地位。在李白身上体现着超越个人利益的社会责任与价值观念,体现出对历史上"士"的传统性格和特征的承袭与超越。

Li Bai, who cherished strong ideals of achievements, was eager to establish a successful career all his life and dedicated himself to the pursuit of his ideals. Li had great esteem for the status and value of the famous historical scholars who made miraculous achievements, and wanted to follow their successful path. However, Li accomplished nothing in politics and was deep in pain and suffering as he was in a special status of neither an official nor a hermit. In Li are embodied the social responsibility and values transcending personal interests, reflecting the inheritance and transcendence of the traditional character and features of Shi （a social stratum in ancient China, between senior officials and the common people）.
