1954年Eastcott完成并报道颈动脉内膜剥脱术（carotid endarterectomy，CEA）后，外科手段干预颅外颈动脉狭窄的方法在国际上确定。1991年北美症状性颈动脉内膜剥脱试验（The North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial,NASCET）
