This article reviewed the background and basic functionality of the MARC formats, and it was pointed out that MARC was manifest in several different formats. It was argued that our present cataloguing codes and MARC formats were based primarily upon the Paris principles and that ＂functional requirements for bibliographic records＂ （FRBR） would serve as a more solid and user- oriented platform for future devdopment of cataloguing codes and formats. Furthermore, the MARC quality criteria were concluded and the future of the MARC formats were discussed. In the end it was outlined how future cataloguing practice and bibliographic records might look.
