The dichotomy of Psyche and flesh, beauty and ugliness is an eternal theme in the history of literature. It＇s not rare for people to sell their soul in order to meet their needs for materials in daily life. What Osear Wilde wants to prove is that beauty is above everything, beauty cannot be harmed by time, artists shouldn＇t show their sympathy in the art. However, according to the theory of the Reader-Response Criticism, the meaning of the text of any literary work could not be recognized except after the reading of the reader. This article tries to expound that the relationship between beauty and psyche is contradictory and inseparable in The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
