Abstract Timber identifying experts attach more and more importance to using mini computer to distinguish timber, and making it automatic. The study in this respect was begun in late 1970s or early 1980s at home and abroad, developed quickly and obtained some achievements. The most reports about timber distinguish were to identify it by data base software, it has not been found reported that a computer compact disk obtaining timber structure pictures being maken, and the timber structure picture being used as the main factor to identify timber. The computer compact disk has been firstly used to discern timber in this system, which is a store way of large capacity information. The 1000 species commercial timber, included in this system, subordinate to 105 families 562 genera, distrituted over whole China and more than twenty neighbor Asiatic countries. The system has 2000 color pictures of timber structure and more than one million words information. The technology principle of this system, firstly is that the timber colour pictures are stored in the compact disk in the form of pictorial superversion, after being scanned and dealed with by computer; secondly is that the literal information of timber structure feature, timber name, timber character and chief use etc., having been dealed with by computer, are stored in the compact disk in the form of literal superversion. Pictorial and literal superversion are joined up by using the computer software designed by the program edited language Delphi 3 0, which is the most advanced in the present world. Any characteristic information is in contact with its related pictures, connecting and transfering mutually. The interface picture is clear and lifelike. It solves the technology poser that using computer to deal with timber structure picture. The system can be consulted audio visually and rapidly, with its result accurate and credible. When consulting a tree species, the computer can search automatically and display the pictures of the related tree species having the imported characteristic, provided one or several conspicous structure characteristic of the consulted timber being imported into the computer. Then further comparing the characteristic with the showed pictures, ascertain the similar picture and beat while the cursor being directed at the picture, soon the detailed information and enlarged picture will be displayed. when the stored picture and characteristic information being consistent with the consulted, the name of the consulted tree species can be ascertained. This system has seven consulting function. All of the information is written in both Chinese and English. It has teaching demonstrate and the definition to the timber characteristic information. It widely applys to the study of timber scientist from china and foreign countries, the timber science teaching of universities, colleges and technical secondary schools, the personnel processing timber and wooden furniture, the economic and trade management staff to identify timber, etc. In Nanning Guangxi, this system passed the evaluation of technology results in March 1998. The experts participated in the conference, identically evaluated that this system is in the lead internal levels, and reachs advanced world standards.
