薛福成是中国近代著名的思想家,对近代中西方的差距及其原因有着清醒的认识,提出要大胆吸收西方现有的科技成果,发展近代教育事业,培养近代科技人才。他不仅有承认落后的勇气,而且充满了"师而相胜"的自信。
