数控加工分为手工编程和自动编程两种，自动编程是应用CAM／CAM软件自动生成程序，里面几乎都是直线的简单指令组合，虽然数据相当准确，但是非常繁琐，根本没有办法读懂，也就更不能够修改。宏程序是手工编程的高级形式，利用变量编程，对于中等难度的零件，使用宏程序进行编程加工要比自动编程加工快得多，程序也比自动编程的程序简短得多，易懂能修改。在介绍曲面加工的宏程序文章中，由于数学表达式和运动描述比较困难，一般只给出曲面的精加工宏程序，极少给出去除材料的粗加工，给初学者带来很多不便，很多困惑。
