Humans' shining ideal of connection in the mystery and muddle of the world has been mirrored in E. M. Forster's A Passage to India. The muddle and mystery of Indian nature is just like the cosmos in miniature. The characters' quest for the ideal of connection reflects the dilemma individuals are in when they are managing to establish the connection in the real world. The isolation of Islam, Christianity and Hinduism and the rupture of the connection between the British and the Indians indicate the separation and disconnection of human beings and at the same time imply the possibility for the ideal of connection philosophically and poetically. Forster says, "perhaps life is a mystery~ not a muddle. " Only when we keep learning, respect each other and promote dialogues on an and equal basis can we hope to have a deeper understanding of the ultimate truth and what life truly is.
