摘要
本文将Langacker和Talmy基于图形-背景理论的词汇和句法层面的分析拓展到叙事语篇层面,认为叙事的连贯性可从三重"图形-背景"关系作出解读:(1)分句层面的主补关系,(2)语段层面的话题与论述,(3)叙事语篇中情状句间的关系。本文主要探讨第三种关系。主要观点是:情状句在叙事语篇中构成话题统领下的事件域,事件域中的情状句表现为完成状与非完成状,并且在语篇中呈现出两种不同形式的突显,成为叙事中不断发展的前景-背景,形成一个"前景-背景"链,推动叙事的发展。
A broad and profound study has been at the lexical and syntactic levels within the Figure-Ground theory in cognitive linguistics by Langaeker and Talmy. This paper aims to advance this study to discourse level. It is proposed that discourse coherence can be construed at three different levels within figure and ground ： （ 1 ） clausal subject-complement relationship, （2） topic and its narration in a discourse fragment and, （3） situation-complexes in a narrative discourse. We maintain that situation complexes are governed by the topic of a narrative. They manifest distinguishing features of being perfective and imperfective and comprise event domains that display two kinds of prominence which in a narrative will be respectively foreground and background conforming to and making up Figure-Ground chain with Figure as the backbone in the temporal development of discourse.
