The alkylation of naphthalene with MeOH, EtOH, iPrOH and tBuOH over zeolites HY, Hβ, HM and HZSM_5 was investigated. The catalytic activity of the zeolites mainly depended on their pore structure. The conversion of naphthalene on the zeolites decreased in the order of HY>Hβ>HM>HZSM_5. The activity trend of alkylating agent was MeOH<EtOH<iPrOH<tBuOH. The decrease of activity in isopropylation on HZSM_5 and in tertbutylation on the other zeolites was attributed to that the reaction product (alkylnaphthalene) molecules were too large to penetrate the zeolites. On the same zeolite, the alkylation selectivity for β-position rose with the increase of alkylating agent size. The βselectivity on the zeolites changed according to the reactant size. HZHM_5 gave the highest β-selectivity for methylation and ethylation. For isopropylation, HM exhibited high selectivity. It was supposed that the selectivity for β-position resulted from the synergism occurring between the zeolite pore structure and the shape of alkylation product.
