The Prototype Category and the Combining Word Formation Process in English and Chinese

从原型范畴的视角看,词根和词缀作为合成法构词的原料本身就是内部成员典型程度不一、边界相互渗透的原型范畴;合成法构词则是从典型派生逐渐过渡到典型复合的双中心原型范畴,合成词在范畴中的位置取决于词缀和词根本身的典型程度以及它们的组合形式。揭示词根、词缀和合成构词法的原型范畴属性,有助于全面考查英汉语言中各种不同原型等级合成新词的方式,从而更深入地把握合成构词法的本质。

This paper makes a rather detailed study of the combining word formation process in English and Chinese from the prototype category. It is found that, owing to the prototypicality of the affix and the root, combination is in fact a two -centered prototype category, presenting a continuum from typical derivation to typical compounding with cases of Varied membership degree in between. The prototype theory throws new light on the most productive word formation process and gives us a better understanding of it.
