After the early hostile responses,The Awakening by Kate Chopin was neglected for almost half a century until critics rediscovered it and American feminists enjoyed it. Among the revival of interest in this novel, the value and meaning of Edna's feminine consciousness and her awakening can be regarded as the focus of the novel. Not only is it central to the interpretation of Edna's character, but also it is closely related to the theme of the story. Based on the unique local color in the novel, this paper analyzes the Creole society's influence on Edna's feminine conseiousness, laying more emphasis the historical and social context of the novel.
