This paper deals with the illocutionary meanings contained in the sentences of meta-utterances from four aspects. Firstly the paper emphasizes that context plays a decisive role in affecting the illocutionary meanings. Then it discusses the function of and the psychologiealness of meta-utterances. Finally the paper illustrates that the illocutionary meanings contained in the sentences of meta-utterances are influenced by rhetorical sentences, and the relationship between the sentences of the metautterances and the soeech tempo is also expounded.
