摘要
由于霍桑所处的社会、时代背景,家世渊源和成长经历等因素的综合作用,其小说创作深受清教思想的影响。一方面,在"原罪"等清教罪恶观的影响下,霍桑着重描绘和探索隐匿在人们内心深处的"隐秘之罪"。另一方面,受"赎罪"等清教思想的影响,霍桑致力于探讨道德和罪恶的问题,主张通过善行和自忏来获得"救赎"。
Influenced by his complicated personal experience,family and social background,Nathaniel Hawthorne's novels were filled up by Puritanism.Hawthorne probed into human being's 'hidden sin',which was considered to be caused by original sin.On the other hand,Hawthorne attended himself to the study of morality and crime and suggested 'redemption from God' by benevolence and penitence.
