Participants in a discourse tend to infer and judge the real intention of the other party in the light of their non-verbal behaviors so as to access the inexplicable discourse message. The message disposal process of inference and judgment itself, however, is exactly a kind of cognitive process. Non-verbal behaviors are able to bring the discourse message into prominence and form the implied pragmatic message into a figure. Here non-verbal behaviors will be analyzed from the perspective of Figure-Ground Theory. This paper attempts to break through the frame of cross-cultural communication by extending the research of non-verbal behaviors into the domain of cognitive linguistics.
