英语外来词的修辞功能

外来词是英语修辞中一个独特的领域。它的修辞功能,一类是在意识层上吸收异族文化的精华,填补英语词汇的不足,借以达到交际修辞所崇尚的简洁、明了;另一类是在潜意识层上宣泄某种内在的感情,抒发某种潜伏的意念。

Among the rhetorical devices used in English,words on loan from other languages stand out as a special category. Such words primarily serve two rhetori-cal functions. On one hand,they have the capacity to intensify the level of awareness,by means of emulating the high-achievements of other nations' cultures,making contributions in this way to the brevity and clarity of expression. On the other hand,words on loan act on the subconscious level,as an outlet for inner feelings.
