The term American Dream runs throughout American literature as a recurring theme. However, in differ- ent periods, within different classes and ethnic groups, this term mirrors different images of American literary protagonists. Some are pioneers, and some portray a New Man while still others are depicted as nonstarters. The thesis opens with a definition of the term American Dream, before fo- cusing samples on American literary works from different periods, classes, and ethnic groups, as it clarifies these three representations of American Dream in American literary tradition.
