现有对《米德尔马契》中卡苏朋夫妻形象的评论常常被视作“定论”。但如果透视这些评论的方法适用性,就会发现这些定论值得怀疑。文学研究过程基本上是划一个界面,按照这个界面来进行条件设置,然后按照这个设置所形成的尺度去度量作品。人们常常争议的是按照某个尺度去度量作品,却没发现人们常常在划一个界面的地方就存在着差异。
Some of the existing critical opinions on Casaubon and Dorothea, two major characters in Middlemarch, are regarded as verdict, yet they are doubtful if they are studied from the point of view of applicability of literary methodology. Literary studies usually follows this pattern: to circle a dimension, to set conditions to define the dimension, and then to measure the text according to the criteria from the set conditions. The critics often quarrel about the criteria on the works, not finding the fact that they differ greatly from the very beginning of circling the dimension.
