This paper attempts to analyze the mother-daughter relationship and the female identity presented in The Diaries of Jane Somers by Doris Lessing. A conclusion is reached that Lessing, in this work, tries to reconstruct the mother-daughter relationship based on her affirmation over the importance of this relationship in the construction of female identity and on her emphasis upon the significant influence of maternal history on female writing.
