Twenty-eight-year-old Ah Mei1 has a two-month-old baby in her hometown in rural Sichuan Province, but she breast-feeds another woman's child in Shenzhen. Ah Mei is one of the many wet nurses hired by rich city women who have used agencies that place wet nurses. Such agencies have mushroomed around the country in the past 18 months. Some women who can't, or don't want to, breast-feed their children are hiring wet nurses to provide their children with the nutritional and health advantages that come from breast milk. Doctors agree, 'breast is best,' so isn't it a mother's right to hire a wet nurse? Some say no. They argue it's unethical, creates health hazards and threatens the natural mother-baby bond.
