Notes on Academic Schools in Translation

本文分4步展开对中国译学流派的探讨。文章的第一部分概括论述了中国学术思想上流派纷呈的历时和共时盛景;第二部分集中于论述译坛流派的发展沿革及从中得到的教益;文章继而阐述了20世纪特别是其最后20年对中国译学理论发展的重要意义,即空前的实践规模和研究深度造就了中国功能主义翻译及理论流派的诞生及其发展取向;文章最后一部分提出了对中国译坛流派发展的愿景。

To describe the development and the status quo of the academic schools in translation in China, the author presents from a diachronic as well as synchronic point of view a general picture of the development of the Chinese academic schools. According to the author, almost all arguments in connection with translation strategy in the history of Chinese translation originated in those in Chinese traditional philosophy and poetics. This is also true of schools of translation in China. The article then focuses on the historical formulation of 'the Chinese functionalism in translation' in the 20th Century as the result of its unprecedented efforts in practice and theoretical studies. The author also lists up some of the basic features of the school in the article and at the same time epxresses his hope for a panoramic development of various translation schools in China in the not-too-distant future.
