By way of archetypal approach, this thesis intends to prove Blanche Dubois, the protagonist in Tennessee Williams' s A Streetcar Named Desire, is a pure female rather than a loose woman from the perspective of traditional criticism. A sacrificial purifier and an intruder into a hostile environment, Blanche is bearing the characteristics of scapegoat archetype, thus, she can be regarded as a character deriving from scapegoat archetype, i. e. she is a scapegoat, not a dissipated woman.
