Mere Juxtaposition Is also a Cohesive Device

自从 Halliday 的衔接理论问世以来,关于语篇衔接和连贯的讨论一直不断。但我们认为有些讨论不能解决问题。我们建议换一个角度开展研究,从语言运用的总体规律——人们的谈话都是互相有关联的角度,重新思考这个问题,把实际使用的话语都看成是连贯的。这就是说,"并置"本身就是一种衔接手段。

Halliday and Hasan(1976)discussed in some detail the cohesive devices in English.Linguists like Widdowson(1978),Brown and Yule(1983),however, argued that the cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for the coherence of a text.A coherent text may not have any of these devices,and a text full of these devices may not be coherent either. This paper,following the argument by Quirk et al.(1985), tries to approach this question from a new perspective, from the regularity in the use of language—every utterance is connected with its co-text.In other words, we propose that mere juxtaposition is also a cohesive device.
