Prof. LI Dengkui's contributions to Chinese dialectology

李新魁教授对汉语方言研究的贡献：一是对广东闽、粤、客方言的描写研究；二是对上述方言与汉语语音史关系的研究；三是对汉语方言史的研究。李教授治方言学有三个方面的经验：一为点面结合，既博且精；二为“死”“活”结合，相互印证；三为动静结合，着眼发展；四为长短结合，换而不舍。

Prof. LI Dengkui's contributions to Chinese dialectology are many, including descriptive studies onCantonese dialect and Hakka dialect and Fujian dialect in Guangdong Province, a research into the relationshjp of thesethree dialects with tile history of Chinese phonology, and a research into the history of Chinese dialectology. Prof. LIDengkui's experiences in his purseit of Chinese dialectology can be summed up as coming under four headings: acombination of points points with planes characterized by outstanding achievements based upon a wide range of knowledge, acombination of 'dead' materials with 'living' ones for comberation, a cowhination of the dynamic with the static withan eye to, further development, and a combiation of long-term research with short-term investigation by steady thens.
