Abstract The big copper coins were first appeared in Shaanxi and Hedong areas which lacking of military supplies because of the war with West Xia Dynasty, then expended to the southeast area with heavy shortage of copper coins. These big coins made great affection on the mone tary system and the situation of currency circulating area in North Song Dynasty, changed the division of currency circulating region* and the private coins were spread in copper coins area . They also influenced the co - circulation of copper`coins and iron coins in Shaanxi area, then there appeared a new paper money- Xiao Chao in copper coin circulating area in North Song Dynasty .
