The creation of sculptures in Donghai Road, Qingdao can be said to be an unprecedented large-scale cultural project in the history of Qingdao. With a total investment of 0.2 billion yuan, the project covers an area of 12.8 km in length and has gathered a huge number of sculptors from art institutions, sculptural societies and institutes throughout the country. Within two years, sculptures and other supporting afforestation and public facilities will be completed simultaneously. This is indeed very rare in the country. It is proper to see the project as an overall demonstration of the level of China's urban sculptures at the current stage. The sculptures in Donghai Road add another new landscape of strong cultural flavor to the city of Qingdao, setting up the benchmark for sustained growth of Qingdao, a milestone in its modernization drive. For public appraisal, the sculptures to be erected in Donghai Road were exhibited at an exhibition which attracted huge crowds of people. It is said that this has been the most spectacular art show in the past century of Qingdao. The priority given by the government and the enthusiasm of the people have helped create this cultural hotspot. It shows that the conditions and factors indispensable for the existence of China's urban sculptures have made greater improvement beneficial to the development of urban sculptures. The project construction in Donghai Road of Qingdao is expected to reach the first class in natural environment, public facilities, afforestation and sculptural design, It will focus on the themes of 'Chinese civilization' and 'affection of the sea'. The large-scale construction will serve as a good example for others to follow and provide a proper mode for the development of urban sculptures. For years Chinese sculptors have been fettered by 'will of the officialdom' in their artistic creation, But this time they are given much freedom to create works that give full play to their individuality. The success of the project will definitely add freshness and vitality to the modern culture of Qingdao and exert an inestimable influence on its cultural development in the future. The sculptures in Donghai Road benefit from the natural scenery with the sea as the background and the exquisitely-designed garden-like environment. The 48 pieces of sculptural works are scattered in 11 scenic areas and 1 square, Great efforts have been made to attach importance to the harmony between the sculptures and the environment. On the whole, these works show that modern Chinese sculptors have freed them selves from the rigid mode of expression in the past. They have attempted to use a new artistic language to express a new concept of value. The pursuit of changes and renovations in the creation of urban sculptures conforms to the modern development of diversified cultures.
