One of the famous hometowns of many overseas Chinese, Shantou has owed its success in construction and development to vast capital investments from overseas Chinese over a century since it became an open port city. Based on a rich collection of historical data, this paper expounds the characteristic features, developments and changes in capital investments from overseas Chinese ever since Shantou became an open port city, and puts forward the ideas on ways to better the job of investment invitation for the city hereafter according to the actual state of affairs by making serious investigation into such conditions of overseas Chinese as their patriotic feeling and economic strength, etc., and by paying more attention to global in formation network.
