Expression of CD15 antigen and fibronectin (Fn) were studied using an immunohistochemical technique (SP method) in 49 human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs),13 hepatic cirrhosis with mild-moderate dysplasia and 7 normal livers. The results showed that:(1) 30.6% (15/49)of HCCs expressed CD15,but it was not observed on non-cancerous hepatocytes. There was a statistically significant difference in metastasis between the CD15- positive groups and CD15-negative groups(P<0.01),but no difference in differentiation or histologic type(P>0.05).(2)In normal livers and cirrhotic livers with mild-moderate dysplasia,Fn was predominantly distributed on the sinusoidal surface of the hepatocytes, but no expression was seen in HCCs. These findings indicate that changes in the expression of CD15 and Fn might be taken as markers for differentiating benign from malignant pathologic changes and for evaluating the prognosis of hepatic cancer.
