On May 7th, Jacques Chirac, candidate of the Rally for the Republic (RPR)and Mayor of Paris, defeated the Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin in the secondround of the French presidential election and was elected the fifth president of theFifth Republic. Alain Juppe, Chirac’s close assistant and former foreign minister,was appointed as the prime minister of the new cabinet. Thus ended the formerPresident Francois Mitterrand’s Socialist rule of 14 years and ushered in an epochof Gaullist Chirac, a man who will lead France into the 21st century.
